Deadly Clashes Erupt in Kenya as Protests Sweep Major Cities

Nairobi, June 25, 2025 – Kenya was rocked by widespread protests on Wednesday, resulting in at least eight deaths and more than 400 casualties, as demonstrators clashed with police in Nairobi and other urban centers. The unrest, fueled by public anger over government policies and recent incidents of police brutality, saw thousands take to the streets demanding President William Ruto’s resignation.

Protesters Confront Police, Demand Change

The demonstrations, organized largely through social media and driven by trending hashtags such as #SiriNiNumbers and #OccupyStatehouse2025, paralyzed much of Nairobi’s central business district. Protesters, many waving flags and carrying placards with the faces of those killed in last year’s rallies, marched toward State House and other government buildings. Security forces responded with teargas, batons, and live ammunition, leading to violent confrontations and chaos across the city.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the fatalities occurred across six counties: Machakos (2), Makueni (2), Nakuru (1), Kiambu (1), Uasin Gishu (1), and Nyandarua (1). Over 400 people were injured, including protesters, police officers, and journalists. While most were treated and discharged, 83 required specialized medical care. Authorities also detained 61 individuals, primarily in Nairobi.

Government Crackdown and Media Blackout

The government deployed a heavy security presence around key institutions, including the presidency, parliament, and business districts. Roadblocks were set up, and commuter train services were suspended to prevent more protesters from entering the city center. The Communications Authority of Kenya ordered all media houses to halt live broadcasts of the protests, a move condemned by human rights groups as a violation of the public’s right to information.

KNCHR reported that criminal elements infiltrated the protests in several cities, leading to incidents of looting and property destruction. “Hired goons” were said to have joined demonstrations in Eldoret, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kajiado, and Kisumu, further escalating tensions.

Political Fallout and Calls for Accountability

The unrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Ruto administration’s handling of dissent and police conduct. The recent death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody, for which six individuals including three officers have been charged with murder, has intensified public outrage. Kenyans continue to mourn the loss of over 60 people killed during last year’s protests, demanding accountability for security forces.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga criticized politicians for exploiting the turmoil to advance their 2027 election ambitions, urging leaders to focus on governance and solutions to the country’s pressing challenges. Odinga emphasized the need for reforms and cautioned against early campaigning, calling it detrimental to national stability.

Impeachment Bid Against Nairobi Governor

In a related development, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja faces an impeachment petition from residents accusing him of abuse of office, rights violations, and using hired goons to suppress dissent. The petitioners, led by Bonface Sila Munyao, claim the governor’s actions during recent evictions and protests have exacerbated tensions in the capital. Several Nairobi County Assembly members have reportedly agreed to table the motion, signaling further political strife at the county level.

The scale and intensity of Wednesday’s protests have drawn international attention, with human rights organizations and foreign governments expressing concern over the escalating violence and restrictions on media coverage. As Kenya marks the anniversary of last year’s deadly parliamentary invasion, the country faces mounting pressure to address grievances, ensure accountability, and restore calm amid deepening political and social divisions.
