MSNBC Faces Backlash Over Alleged Bias and Sharp Decline in Viewership
MSNBC, one of Americaâs leading cable news networks, is facing mounting criticism over accusations of biased reporting and a significant drop in audience numbers. The network, known for its liberal-leaning commentary and high-profile hosts such as Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes, has been under scrutiny for its editorial choices, particularly in its coverage of politically sensitive issues.
Recent ratings data reveal a steep decline in MSNBCâs viewership. In May 2025, the network averaged 877,000 primetime viewersâa 24% decrease compared to the previous year. Its total day audience dropped by 33%, averaging 545,000 viewers. The coveted 25-54 age demographic saw an even sharper decline, with MSNBCâs primetime audience in that group falling 34% year-over-year to just 73,000 viewers. The networkâs total day audience in the same demographic plummeted 41%.
Industry analysts attribute part of this downturn to changes in the networkâs programming schedule, including Rachel Maddowâs reduced presence, now hosting only once a week. This adjustment reportedly contributed to the pronounced drop in primetime and total day ratings.
The networkâs editorial stance has also drawn criticism. Academics, media watchdogs, and political figures have accused MSNBC of exhibiting a liberal bias in its coverage, particularly during the 2015â2024 period. These allegations have fueled debate about the networkâs role in shaping public opinion and the broader issue of media impartiality.
Adding to the controversy, reports have emerged of the White House displaying posters of criminal illegal aliens behind TV correspondents during MSNBC broadcasts. Critics claim this tactic is intended to disrupt the networkâs coverage and influence its editorial narrative, further intensifying the debate over media bias and government interference.
Despite these challenges, MSNBC remains the second most-watched cable news network, ahead of CNN but trailing Fox News, which saw year-over-year growth in both total viewers and the key demographic. The networkâs leadership faces mounting pressure to address both the ratings slump and ongoing concerns about editorial objectivity as the media landscape continues to evolve.
