New Zealand Cricket Star Sophie Devine to Retire from ODIs After 2025 World Cup
Sophie Devine, the iconic all-rounder and captain of New Zealand’s women’s cricket team, will retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) at the conclusion of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. The tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2, will serve as the finale to Devine’s nearly two-decade ODI career.
Devine, 35, made her ODI debut in 2006 and has since become one of the most decorated cricketers in New Zealand’s history. She has amassed 3,990 runs across 152 ODIs at an average of 31.66, including eight centuries, and taken 107 wickets—making her one of only two New Zealand women with over 100 ODI wickets. Her leadership has also been instrumental, guiding the White Ferns to a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and their first ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title last year.
While Devine will step away from ODIs and opt out of New Zealand Cricket’s central contract list for the 2025-26 season, she will remain available for T20 Internationals on a casual basis, allowing her to continue contributing to the team’s development and success. New Zealand Cricket has expressed strong support for her decision, with leaders praising her extraordinary contributions and ongoing influence within the sport.
Devine’s final ODI appearance as captain will be in a high-stakes World Cup clash against Australia on October 1 in Indore. “It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away,” Devine said, emphasizing her commitment to the team and excitement for the future of New Zealand women’s cricket.
