Trump Demands Special Prosecutor to Investigate 2020 Election Fraud Claims

WASHINGTON, June 20, 2025 — President Donald Trump on Friday called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate alleged fraud in the 2020 presidential election, reigniting widely debunked claims that the contest he lost to former President Joe Biden was tainted by misconduct.

In a statement posted to his Truth Social platform, Trump described the 2020 election as a ā€œtotal FRAUDā€ and insisted, ā€œA Special Prosecutor must be appointed. Let the work begin!ā€ He asserted that the evidence of fraud was ā€œmassive and overwhelming,ā€ urging the Department of Justice to act to ā€œprevent this from ever happening again in the United States of Americaā€.

Trump’s demand follows recent public claims by FBI Director Kash Patel regarding declassified documents that allegedly detail interference in the 2020 election. However, these claims have not been substantiated by independent sources or official investigations.

Despite Trump’s renewed push, numerous independent reviews and audits, as well as more than 60 lawsuits filed by Trump and his allies, have found no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could have altered the outcome of the 2020 election. Courts at every level, including the U.S. Supreme Court, rejected challenges to the results, and even Trump’s own Justice Department concluded there was no fraud on a scale that would have changed the result.

The Justice Department has not commented on Trump’s latest call for a special prosecutor. Under current law, only the attorney general can appoint a special prosecutor in cases where the Justice Department faces a conflict of interest.

Trump’s continued assertions about the 2020 election have fueled conspiracy theories and were cited as contributing factors to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Legal experts and election officials have repeatedly stated that the integrity of the 2020 vote was upheld, and that audits in key states, such as Georgia, confirmed the accuracy of the results.

Trump’s statement comes as he faces ongoing scrutiny for his actions following the 2020 election, including a federal indictment in 2023 related to efforts to overturn the result. Those charges were later dropped after Trump’s 2024 election victory.

As of Friday, the Department of Justice has not indicated any plans to revisit the 2020 election or appoint a special prosecutor in response to Trump’s demand.
