A shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, left four students injured and sent shockwaves through the community, marking the second such incident at the campus in just over a year.

Authorities say the shooting erupted around 1:25 p.m., prompting a massive law enforcement and emergency response. Students were seen fleeing the building as officers from Dallas ISD Police, Dallas Police Department, and Dallas Fire-Rescue converged on the scene. The school was immediately placed on lockdown, and a nearby elementary school also went into lockdown as a precaution.

Eyewitness accounts describe chaos and panic. “I turned around, all I heard was seven gunshots. I grabbed a teacher and ran in the room. Running, everybody was running,” recalled student Patrick Campos. Another senior told reporters he heard gunshots during lunch and saw students scrambling for safety before taking cover in the band room.

Four male students, ages 15 to 18, were hospitalized. Three suffered gunshot wounds, while the fourth sustained a musculoskeletal injury to the lower body, possibly from fleeing the scene. One victim was reported in serious condition, but all are expected to survive. Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins emphasized, “We don’t have a serious injury right now to my knowledge. Pray for the family. Pray for the kids. Pray for the students. And thank God no one is crucially injured”.

Parents were directed to reunite with their children at Eagles Stadium adjacent to the campus, and all students had been picked up by their families by early evening.

Investigation and Suspect

Initial reports indicated the shooting was student-on-student violence rather than a random active shooter event. Law enforcement quickly identified a suspect, who was taken into custody later that evening after turning himself in at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center. The suspect’s identity has not been released, and officials have not disclosed a motive, stating the investigation remains “fresh and fluid”.

Officials confirmed the firearm did not enter the building during the primary intake period when students pass through metal detectors, but have not explained how the weapon bypassed security.

Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde addressed the community, saying, “Today as we all know, the unthinkable has happened. And quite frankly, this is just becoming way too familiar, and it should not be familiar”. She credited a teacher’s quick thinking for helping prevent further violence.

Classes at Wilmer-Hutchins High School have been canceled for the remainder of the week, with counselors available for students and staff coping with the trauma.
