India Bolsters Energy Security with 40 Crude Oil Suppliers, Says Modi Government

New Delhi, June 25, 2025 – The Indian government announced a major milestone in its energy security strategy, revealing that the country now sources crude oil from 40 different suppliers worldwide. This diversification, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, comes as global energy markets face uncertainty amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized that India’s fuel supply remains stable and there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in the country. He credited the government’s proactive approach for ensuring uninterrupted access to energy, noting that the number of crude oil supplying countries has risen sharply from 27 to 40 in recent years. Domestic crude oil production is also on the rise, further strengthening India’s position.

India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has historically relied heavily on the Middle East for its energy needs. However, since 2022, the share of Middle Eastern suppliers in India’s import basket has dropped from 65% to just 39% as of June 2025. Russian imports have surged dramatically and now account for 44% of total imports, while shipments from Latin America and the United States have also reached record highs. This shift has reduced India’s dependence on oil transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, with only about 40% of crude imports now passing through the strategic waterway, down from over 60% three years ago.

Minister Puri assured citizens that India’s oil marketing companies have sufficient reserves, with most holding stock for up to three weeks and some for as long as 25 days. Deliveries continue through alternative global routes, and strategic petroleum reserves provide an additional buffer of 9-10 days of supply.

The government’s multi-continent sourcing strategy, combined with rising domestic production and robust reserves, has enhanced India’s resilience to external shocks. Officials reiterated that India is closely monitoring geopolitical developments and remains in contact with international partners to ensure stable energy supplies.

This comprehensive approach underscores the Modi government’s commitment to energy security and economic stability, even as global tensions threaten traditional supply routes.
