UN Faces Global Tensions and Funding Challenges on 80th Anniversary

UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced grave concern over recent U.S. military strikes against Iran, warning that escalating hostilities risk triggering a “spiral of chaos.” Iran’s Foreign Minister condemned the attacks as violations of international law and called for an emergency Security Council session, underscoring deep divisions among member states over the appropriate response to global conflicts.
The backdrop to these tensions is a severe financial crunch. The U.S., traditionally the UN’s largest donor, has slashed contributions under the Trump administration, with other Western allies following suit. These cuts have forced agencies such as the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNRWA to reduce staff and suspend critical programs, jeopardizing support for millions in conflict zones and refugee camps from Sudan to Syria and Venezuela.
